This is only true for a part of the 5G\nspectrum. <strong>5G is divided into three categories<\/strong> that are relevant for\ndifferent application scenarios. These are optimized to <strong>provide\ndifferent application areas as best as possible<\/strong> \u2013 from huge bandwidths to\nfast, reliable response and energy-saving applications. One should be aware,\nthat 5G is not a silver bullet for all problems. A <strong>large band width and\nreal-time video transmission with a battery life of several years is utopian\neven with 5G<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this respect,\nregardless of the used technology and network, it is <strong>still essential to\ndefine the application precisely <\/strong>in advance. The basic question of <strong>when\nwhich data in which resolution and with which reliability are required<\/strong> are\nsignificant before the technical specification is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-categories-of-5g\">3 Categories of 5G<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"873\" src=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-1024x873.jpg\" alt=\"Die Kategorien von 5G - eMBB, mMTC, URLLC\" class=\"wp-image-4833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-1024x873.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-768x655.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-1536x1310.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc-600x512.jpg 600w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5g-kategorien-embb-mmtc-ullrc.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>eMBB \u2013 enhanced Mobile Broad Band<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concerns the <strong>speed and band widths of &gt; 10 Gb\/s<\/strong>. This is\nmostly pertained to in the area of consumer electronic and the reporting to the\nend customer. The dream of smartphones that download and stream <strong>4k videos<\/strong>\nwithin a very short time. <strong>Virtual reality and artificial intelligence<\/strong> applications\nare also part of this spectrum due to the enormous amount of data. This area can\ntherefore be seen as a continuation of 4G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Internet of Things, small amounts of data are often required, and\nin addition, ultra-low power or energy-saving applications are desired. eMBB is\nnot designed for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>mMTC \u2013 massive Machine Type Communication<\/strong><br>\nWith mMTC, the focus is on <strong>durability<\/strong> and the associated <strong>energy-saving<\/strong>\nmode of operation. The applications in the field should achieve an <strong>operation\ntime of up to 10 years<\/strong>. The <strong>transmission rate is limited (~ 1 MB\/s)<\/strong>,\nwhich is completely sufficient for many Internet of Things applications. For\nexample, with a <strong>water or electricity meter<\/strong> it is sufficient to transmit\nthe measured values every few hours during normal operation. With compression,\nthe amount of data is also kept low. First versions of mMTC are LTE-Cat-M1 or\nNB-IoT.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Austria, the providers are already providing networks and\nMicrotronics is running its first test projects with customers in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>URLLC \u2013 Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication<\/strong><br>\nAs the name implies, URLLC is about <strong>highly reliable communication<\/strong> with <strong>low\nlatency<\/strong>. In other words, applications that must not fail and at the same\ntime <strong>enable very short response times<\/strong>. The delay is in the range of 1ms.\nIn this area, future-oriented topics such as <strong>autonomous driving<\/strong> are\nplaced. But also, the possibility to have surgical interventions performed by\nexperts and specialists from a distance could became reality with URLLC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-1024x672.jpg\" alt=\"Autonomes Fahren\" class=\"wp-image-4831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-1024x672.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-768x504.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-1536x1008.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren-600x394.jpg 600w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/autonomes-fahren.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-appropriate-hardware-for-every-application\">The appropriate hardware\nfor every application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at\nthese 3 categories, it quickly becomes clear that they are <strong>intended for completely\ndifferent applications<\/strong>. Monitoring the cold chain of vegetables with 5G\nURLLC overshoot the mark. Costs and benefits are out of proportion. It will be\nsufficient to measure the values every 5 to 10 minutes. If everything is normal\nand no critical temperature is reached, the values are transferred to the\nserver every hour. Even if it comes to a few minutes delay, this is not a\nproblem. If a critical temperature is reached, send an alarm immediately. Even in\nthe event of an alarm, delays of up to a few minutes are acceptable. After all,\na temperature curve does not change so rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since <strong>for\neach of the three 5G categories a different hardware is required<\/strong>, it is relevant\nto consider in advance exactly which requirements the application has. Think of\nfire detectors that are equipped with 5G. In this application, mMTC is used\nbecause only a small amount of data is sent. The final price of the smart fire\ndetector must be low and the quantities are very high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast\nto the fire detector is the autonomously driving car with URLLC. Super-fast transmission\nand high computing power are required. &nbsp;Communication\nmust be reliable and secure. The consequences of a too slow or not functioning\nconnection could be devastating. Looking at these two examples, it quickly\nbecomes clear that such a<strong> balancing act between enormously high computing power,\navailability and simultaneously low unit costs of thousands of devices it not\npossible<\/strong>. For this reason, each category requires its own hardware that\nexactly meet the requirements and represents the perfect match between costs\nand benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5g-and-iot\">5G and IoT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A large\nnumber of Internet of Things applications such as consumption meters<\/strong> will take place in the <strong>mMTC<\/strong>\narea. The first applications are already in trial operations in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Smarter Meter 5G mMTC Anwendung\" class=\"wp-image-4832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/microtronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/smart-meter-5g.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an application with the limited band width of mMTC is not sufficient, eMBB can be used. This category is currently the most developed.<strong> eMBB is already available in the first smartphones<\/strong>. Since some of the currently installed 5G test transmitters only have eMBB and the required hardware is available much faster and easier, possible mMTC use cases are currently being implemented for test operation via eMBB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>URLLC<\/strong>\narea is very exciting for safety-critical applications or applications that\nrequire highly reliable communication.
