Fleet Management and Predictive Maintenance

Komptech develops and builds machines for the treatment of biomass and solid waste. The product range includes more than 30 different types of machines.

From Australia to Japan, Africa and America, the machines are in use all over the world. This is why worldwide network coverage, independent from individual providers, is particularly important for IoT solutions for fleet management and predictive maintenance. In addition, a globally uniform tariff makes predictable costs a reality.

A further challenge is the use of the solution in a harsh environment. Apart from high temperatures, the hardware must be able to cope with vibrations and high dust generation.

The Solution

The CAN interface of the machines is used to collect the data. The CAN gateway records the data via the CAN bus.

The data is sent via mobile radio to a central server every 15 minutes. The data is then evaluated there and reused in a variety of ways.

In the event of a fault on the machine the error code is immediately sent to the server, regardless of the 15-minute transmission interval. To do this, the data must first be pre-processed directly at the CAN Gateway in order to recognise such events. Further evaluations for service and development take place on the server, where historical data is stored and sufficient memory and computing power are available.

Predictive Maintenance

The technician uses the fault codes to remotely analyse the problem on the machine. This enables the technician to have the necessary spare parts at hand and to rectify the malfunction the first time he is on site at the machine. This fast action pleases the customer and saves costs and effort for both parties.

The IoT solution also offers the opportunity not only to offer reactive services in case of malfunctions, but also to generate additional, new revenue streams by proactively offering services.

Fleet Management

The CAN Gateway records the current position of the machine and also transmits it in a 15-minute cycle.

In the map display on the server the customer sees the position of all his machines. A click takes the customer directly to the detailed evaluation of the respective machine.

As long as the customer owns only one or two Komptech machines, the monitoring, management and maintenance effort is manageable. With 10, 100 or more machines, this effort increases disproportionately and the overview is quickly lost. The presentation of all relevant data on a central platform creates real added value.

Perspective

In addition to the use cases that have already been implemented, the data will in future flow into product development.

In future, several Komptech machines will be linked together in regard of a plant interlinking system. Individual machines then react independently in special situations and adapt various parameters. This will increase the efficiency of the entire system.
